The success of dental implantation depends largely on the implants used. They must be able to root quickly, effectively, and withstand the load of the crowns placed on them. AESTHETE Dental Clinic uses premium quality implants, including systems developed by the Swiss company Straumann.

The Straumann System and its benefits
In 1954, Dr. Reinhard Straumann founded the research institute Dr. Ing. R. Straumann Research Institute AG. The organization was engaged in the creation of alloys for watch movements, but gradually its specialization changed. In 1974, the first dental implant was presented. Since the early 1990s, the institute, which turned into a commercial company, focused on this area of activity. Since then, Straumann products have been on the list of the most demanded implantology systems in the world.
Currently, the company actively cooperates with professional dental communities. One of them is ITI, the International Team of Implantologists, which has 18,500 members. This approach makes it possible to provide feedback, receive data on the effectiveness of products and immediately take them into account when developing new solutions.
The advantages of Straumann implants are:
- a rich selection of models, which allows you to find an option for a patient with partial or complete adentia (missing teeth);
- 99.8% probability of engraftment;
- the ability to predict the result in complex clinical situations;
- lifetime warranty from the manufacturer.
The company's products account for up to 20% of the European implantology market.
What makes Straumann implants unique
Implants from any manufacturer are posts, rods that are implanted into the jaw. Once inserted, they act as tooth roots and hold the crowns placed on them.
An important characteristic of these posts is osseointegration - fusion with the jawbone. It must be:
effective - to ensure secure retention of the crowns;
fast - so that the implants can be loaded with permanent crowns within a relatively short time after insertion.
How do the Swiss developers solve these problems?
One of the conditions for successful osseointegration is good biocompatibility. The post should not provoke an allergic reaction so that the patient's body does not reject it. Therefore, durable bioinert materials, primarily titanium, are used for the manufacture of implants. Zirconium dioxide is also used.
Straumann also uses titanium. But the company's employees went further and invented Roxolid, a unique material, a high-strength alloy of titanium (85%) and zirconium (15%). Its advantages are:
- strength;
- low weight;
- accelerated osseointegration.
The high strength allows the implant to be smaller in size. This makes the placement less invasive and further accelerates the healing time without sacrificing reliability.
The company also produces non-metallic implants. The models from the Pure series are made of ultra-high-strength ceramic. They are used for implantation in the frontal zone. They exclude gingival darkening, which often occurs when soft tissue comes into contact with metal, and maintain the natural look of the smile for a long time.
Another feature is the SLActive surface. It has increased hydrophilic characteristics and thus delivers blood to the post surface more quickly and efficiently. This contributes to accelerated bone formation. The increased chemical activity also attracts protein cells, thus accelerating and improving integration with the bone tissue. Clinical studies have shown that SLActive solutions have a 100 % stability in the first 5 years after implantation.
The range includes solutions with a simplified SLA layer. In this case, the surface is sandblasted and then further etched with acid.
Indications and contraindications
Implantation with Straumann systems is indicated in the following cases.
- One tooth is missing. It is easy to solve the problem with a single Straumann implant. In this case, the situation is simplified by the fact that it is not necessary to touch the neighboring units.
- Several teeth are missing. Depending on the clinical picture, it is possible to install crowns or bridges on Straumann implants. This option is available even in the absence of lateral teeth or in the case of an end defect.
- The teeth are completely missing. Implant-supported crowns or bridges can be used. The number of metal posts that will be needed is determined individually.
Contraindications to implantation do not depend on the type of rods used. It is not recommended to place implants:
- under the age of 18 - as the dentoalveolar apparatus is still forming, over time the implanted posts may fall out;
- Pregnancy;
- Blood clotting disorders;
- in case of tumors in the mouth;
- in case of advanced osteoporosis;
- in the presence of nervous, mental disorders, because of which the patient can not follow the instructions of the doctor.
Choosing an implant technique
There are three common protocols:
- two-stage;
- one-stage;
- one-stage.
A two-stage implantation involves the surgeon placing the implants and waiting for them to take root. After 4-6 months, he loads them with permanent crowns. This is a more reliable option, but it takes more time.
In one-stage implantation, the surgeon implants metal posts and immediately loads them with crowns. This reduces the time it takes to restore the teeth, but increases the risk of implant rejection.
Single-stage implantation is a protocol in which the doctor removes damaged, decayed teeth and implants the implants into the holes left after the extraction.
Each protocol has advantages and disadvantages. Therefore, the choice between them depends on the clinical situation, individual characteristics of the patient. The surgeon makes the final decision.
Stages of implantation
Regardless of the protocol chosen, the interaction between dentist and patient begins with a consultation. The dentist performs an examination and takes images using x-rays or CT scans. The scans are necessary to assess the condition of the dentoalveolar system, to understand whether the jawbone volume is sufficient for implant placement.
After diagnosis, the dentist draws up a treatment plan. In accordance with it the preparation is carried out. In a special computer program, the surgeon outlines the places for the installation of pins, determines the angle of their inclination. A template is prepared, in accordance with which the operation will be carried out.
The patient also needs to prepare. You need to:
- treat caries and other dental diseases;
- eliminate inflammation in the oral cavity;
- if necessary, a professional dental cleaning.
All this makes it possible to minimize the risk of infection in the surgical area.
Osteoplasty, an operation to increase the volume of the jawbone, may also be necessary. It is performed if the bone tissue has atrophied due to insufficient load, because if the volume is insufficient, the implants will not be able to hold in the jaw.
After preparation and planning, the implantation is carried out.
If a one-stage or two-stage protocol is chosen, the surgeon provides access to the jawbone and prepares a bed into which the implant is placed according to a pre-prepared template. In one-stage implantation, the dentist removes the teeth and implants the posts into the wells.
Then, depending on the chosen protocol, the patient is fitted with temporary or permanent crowns. If the implantation is carried out according to a two-stage scheme, he will have to come to the clinic again to replace the temporary crowns with permanent ones. The duration of engraftment depends on the individual characteristics of the body. Straumann implants ensure successful osseointegration in an average of 2-4 months. This is faster than similar posts from other manufacturers.

How to care for Straumann implants
After implantation, you should take good care of your teeth and mouth to prolong the life of the implants and the crowns attached to them. Complications with Straumann products are unlikely, but you should monitor your health and contact your doctor if swelling, soreness, or bleeding persists.
The doctor will give recommendations for care that must be adhered to during the period of engraftment. Usually required:
- not to chew food, especially hard food, on the side where the implant is placed;
- when sleeping, try to lie down so that the side where the implant is implanted is not subjected to increased strain;
- do not brush your teeth in that area, but use a rinse instead;
- take medications prescribed by the doctor, which can be antibiotics, anti-inflammatory and painkillers;
- for a few days to stop smoking and drinking alcoholic beverages, do not drink coffee, limit physical activity.
To clean artificial teeth use a soft brush, brush them from the outside and inside. Interdental spaces are better cleaned with toothbrushes.
Problems with implants can occur not only immediately after installation. Disease and trauma can also lead to rejection, despite the high probability of Ctraumann posts healing, which is 99.8%. If your teeth wobble, if you feel pain when touching them, if they are festering, if you have bad breath, you should visit your doctor.
